Cannella's is all about MEAT. If your order includes a meatball it will be the size of a fist. Hamburgers come with TWO oversized patties. Nearly every menu item includes some kind of meat. I tend to avoid both beef and cured meats so naturally I am not wild about this restaurant. A lot of people seem to love this place, however, judging by the crowds at lunch time and the fact that this restaurant recently expanded into the space formerly occupied by Junior's Bar next door. I, however, have not been particularly impressed by Cannella's. The first 2 times I ate there resulted in a migraine, most likely caused by msg. I didn't eat there again for a long time until recently. Yesterday's experience was abysmal, beginning with being rushed through our order and ending with me eating out of a to-go box before hurrying late back to work because they somehow never made our order and I waited 25 minutes before going to inquire. ** 2/09 - I've had some much better experiences at Cannella's lately. Best bruschetta in SLC.**

I've been getting large Italian salads with house dressing from Cannella's for the past 15 years. It's pure comfort food for me and I'll drive half way across the valley when I have the urge. The turkey tetrazzini special on Thursdays is to die for. I have an ongoing wager with friends that Sid (the only waitress) has ESP, because she always knows who orders what, even though she does not take your order (you order at the counter). It's owned an operated by a local family, easy to get to from the freeway, and is a great place to have a business lunch in downtown SLC.

Wow, stumbled across this place going to the library and ended up having one of the best meals I can recall ever eating. Granted I hadn't eaten all day...but damn Dine o'round set up a fixed price of $15 for 4 course meal. Fresh and amazing. Make sure you eat here if you are in town, I'm sure the locals already know about it!!

So it wasn't the best Dine O'Round experience ever when I just visited here. Me and my friend ordered the Dine O'Round, and the they just completely skipped the first course of Bruschetta. We never ended up getting it, so that wasn't a good start. For our second course (well actually our first), he had a salad, I had a cream of cauliflower soup, both seemed ok, nothing to write home about. For the main entree, I went with the 3 cheese ravioli and sausage, which was decent but did come out not very hot. I'd say it was deserving of 3 stars in itself. Just as we were getting done with that, a pregnant woman slipped and fell to the floor on water on the floor right in front of us, which was quite concerning. There didn't seem to be a whole lot done to go out of their way to apologize or make sure that such a potentially problematic situation was properly handled, other than asking if she was ok. That put another bad taste in my mouth. What it did have going for it was nice decor. All in all, I'd recommend spending your Dine O'round dollars elsewhere... Taco Taco is right next door.

Salt Lake City, UT: I really wanted to like this place and blame this lower star review on the meal I ordered. I got the Thursday special - pasta salad with your choice of soup or salad. I chose the minestrone and it was amazing. My pasta salad...not so much. It was utterly bland and lacked the flavor pasta salads normally have. I asked our waitress for a side of Italian dressing thinking that would combat the blandness. Unfortunately, it made little difference: I apparently just lucked out with eating the blandest pasta salad ever. At about ten dollars a meal, I find that to be unacceptable. Despite my pasta salad experience, I'll give kudos to this restaurant for excellent service, a thumbs up for the free gelato with a check in, and finally, five stars for the minestrone. Do try this place...just avoid the pasta salad.

Best clam linguini in Salt Lake try it with a hot Italian sausage on the side and make your sauce a little pink. AWESOME!!

You guys are awesome, we love the food and the service. Best Italian food in SL! But we are so sad that our favorite salad is off the menu :(( The pear and polenta crouton one. Please bring it back, Best salad in the city!!!

Went here because the first place we wanted to go to was closed due to a remodel. This was nearby so we decided to give it a try. I got bruschetta which was pretty good, also got the pesto three cheese tortellini and was very disappointed. I had very high hopes but it was so bland I had to add salt and pepper to give it some excitement. The garlic bread that comes with the dishes was good! I also liked the Cesar salad. Tried the Italian Sausage pizza and it tasted like a microwavable pizza from the grocery store.. I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon..

The Italian Salad is fantastic. Pastas and garlic bread are very good. My dining companion loved her turkey club. I appreciated that there was a vegetable soup offered that was very similar to minestrone but without the pasta. Check in on YELP and enjoy a scoop of gelato- the pistachio was delicious. There is mint in the iced tea! I love iced tea. The recent updates to the overall layout really improve the ambiance.

Stopped in for dessert and enjoyed it! The ambiance was quiet and felt like something I could find in NYC. We had the dessert Pizza (raspberry, mascarpone, chocolate drizzle) which was good but needed a deeper flavor (dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg). Perfect portion for 4-6 people Also had the cannoli (4) which was stuffed. with the perfect hints of cherry and orange fillings. Wait staff was uber friendly and easy to talk and joke around with. Based on this quick visit, I plan to come back to try their Italian entrees.

Tried to go for lunch but the bigger part of the dining area was closed and I didn't feel like stuffing my stroller and myself in a booth next to the dark bar area. And why does it smell like cigarette smoke. It seems more like a bar. /meh pass

This restaurant was recommended to me by a person who raved about their amazing sausage salad. I'm not sure if I went there on an off day, but everything was just meh. The salad was good, but not amazing. The service was good, but not great. Nor really much to say about my experience. Seems like an okay place with food on par with most chain restaurants. Which isn't necessarily bad.

We shared a vegetarian pizza -- artichokes and ricotta with a few other veggies and drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Slightly underdone and generally pleasant but not remarkable. Same for side green salads. Very comfortable atmosphere, like a long established bistro in a big city. Jazz standards in the background and not too noisy for conversation. Service fine.

We love coming to this place. Great ambience, fantastic service, wonderful food and great cocktails. We love the garlic cheese flat bread, the house salad is so good and you can't beat the lasagna!

We just had a private party of 40 people at Cannella's and It could not have better! The appetizers and the dinner was so delicious. Our guests said their dinner was amazing and the service was top notch! Love me some Cannella's!!1

We met here on Friday night before our Goldilocks ride on Saturday. The atmosphere is cool, we were sat downstairs and had the whole place to ourselves. The only downfall is we were right by the bathrooms which isn't ideal but it was OK. I didn't eat the food here because I had seen the prices prior to coming. I only ordered a side salad which costs $5! It had some pieces of iceberg, a few beets, garbanzo beans and mozzarella and was hardly worth $5! The prices at this place are OUTRAGEOUS! A plate of ravioli was $15, spaghetti was $13..I don't understand how people are willing to pay this much for Italian! I normally go to Siraguas's which has WAY better prices and I'm sure, WAY better food. The only saving grace here was the service. They were on it and very friendly, which I guess might make up for the insane prices. I won't be going to back here, I'll stick with Siragusa's that doesn't gouge you on pricing to pay for their downtown location.

Canella's is superb. It is a cozy mom & pop style Italian restaurant. The food is good, the service is excellent, and the bar is great. You can be as fancy or casual as you like and you won't feel out of place. Canella's is a great local spot for a romantic dinner or a bite with some friends.

Excellent experience. Recommended by the bartender at the Sheraton, they took us without a reservation or wait. Small place, really warm atmosphere super charged by our server, Cat - fantastic personality. Great menu suggestions as well. Her wine suggestion was also great. I had the Pappardelle Bolognese - perhaps the best I have ever put in my mouth. Freshly made pasta the a very flavorful sauce - simply fantastic. House salad came with the meal - excellent as well. Portions were just right, excellent wine, service with a great smile - what else can you ask for!!!

Guided here via TaxAir flying service tonight where our Merlin is parked. Was wanting something more upscale but food looks good here. Service is very good so. App was amazing good broth under the scallops n clams and amazing garlic bread. I am having seared salmon. We shared a piece of beet cake. REALLY good and first time experience. Amazing good, tasted very much as a good dark choc cake. Really good. I would return. lovely ladies waiting on us. Thanks folks.

It beats the italian chain stores. I frequent here quite a bit for work lunches and the service is hit or miss really. What keeps me going is the ambience, wine selection and how central it is. With meals, they're for the most part pretty tasty. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here as well. You can book out a brick room underneath the restaurant which has a completely cool vibe. It's all brick down there, near a wine cellar and almost feels like a speak-easy. It's incredibly romantic.

A buddy of mine and I went to Italy on our mission back in the 90's. This is one of his favorite spots. So we got together and enjoyed some great Italian food in a very relaxed atmosphere to catch up. Highly recommend.

Ah, Dine 'O Round... I always look forward to it every year, because it's fun trying different places and seeing what each restaurant has to offer at a good deal. I've only visited Cannella's once before in high school, so it has been a very long time. The decor has been updated, and it has more of a dark and romantic feel to it than how I remember. As for the food, the first course was Bruschetta which I enjoyed. The second was a choice between soup or salad. I had the Minestrone, and it wasn't all that great. It just seemed like something you could get at a cafeteria. I'll stick with salad if I ever return. For my entree, I chose the Tortellini. This dish was very simple in flavor, and didn't have a lot going on. Although stated that the pasta was stuffed with cheese, they actually didn't have much of a filling that I tasted, if any. The chicken was also dry even though it was covered in sauce. I preferred my date's Pasta Primavera dish with shrimp for an extra $3. For dessert, I redeemed a check-in offer on the Yelp app fora free scoop of gelato. I loved the coconut almond flavor, and the nutella was also tasty. Overall, this is a decent place and worth the $15 special.

Great restaurant, friendly staff, great food. The gnocchi with spicy marinara and chicken was delicious. My fiancé got the vegetarian pizza with balsamic reduction, very tasty. I would definitely recommend stopping by this place.

This was an excellent dinning experience! Don't let the exterior fool you. The ambiance inside is great, the seating is comfortable and the food, oh the food was wonderful! Italian at it's best we shared the bruschetta for an appetizer and it was outstanding. So was my pasta primavera. The service was outstanding as well. I will definitely be going back soon.

Canella's is amazing! Honestly my favorite thing is the Caprese Salad. I've tried lots of other things, and I've been very pleased with all my menu choices. I will admit that the service is a little slow, but I'm still giving 5 stars because the I think the point of them being slow, is so you have time to eat, enjoy and relax. If you are in a rush and need to be somewhere, I might suggest going a lot earlier than planned, or going somewhere else. This is a great date night place because you can sit, eat (amazing food), and talk.

Sometimes, everything comes together for a memorable experience. Have nothing but positive things to say about Cannella's after my first visit here. Our large party arrived around sunset and were quickly accommodated in the picturesque patio area, much to our appreciation. As it grew dark, the restaurant's neon signs and festive window frame lighting, plus well-chosen music, enhanced the mood. The powder blue Vespa out front is also a nice touch. The bruschetta appetizer went fast, because it was really good - very well-balanced in flavors. We noticed the artful presentation as well. The cream of tomato basil soup also received accolades. Salads were carefully prepared, using fresh, high-quality ingredients. Polenta croutons in the pear arugula salad were a welcome twist. Entrees arrived near-simultaneously and fresh from the stove. The carbonara was exceptional, rich with cream and top-drawer bacon. Our picky eater scarfed his thin crust pizza, and the seafood marinara was similarly well-received. Plates were empty when picked up. The chocolate beet cake was absolutely off the hook; super-chocolatety, moist, and decadent, topped with one perfect raspberry. gelato was available in a variety of flavors and as good as you'd find in Italy. Overall, a very enjoyable experience and I will hope to return soon.

I love the vibe this restaurant/bar has very cool and hip, the service is always top notch and the food is great, it's basically your average Italian, but I did see a steak and burger on the menu. I like the drink menu with lots of fun cocktails to choose from (try a pimms cup if you already haven't) and the wine selection is huge. Great little date night spot if your downtown...

Salt Lake Din' O Round 2014 has a good sized list of 3 course dinners available at either $15 and $30 a plate depending on the location. The 3 course menu is limited and unique to each location but my girl and I both picked Canellas. We did this by writing 3 restaurants we'd like to visit on a piece of paper and then exchanging the pieces of paper. The common location wins. Yes, you could end up without a match but perhaps you should re-evaluate your dinner company if it happens often. Anyways, the bruschetta (1st course) had a generous (almost too generous) serving of feta cheese and the 2nd course was minestrone soup or a house salad. I liked the beets in the house salad and thought the minestrone was average. For the 3rd course we skipped the pizza option and instead chose cheese tortellini in marinara and pasta primavera with a shrimp add on. I enjoyed the primavera most but we didn't manage to finish either plate (which is rare for me). For $15 each though...one can't really complain. Drinks of course are an additional cost but the gelato at the end of our meal wasn't because of a special reward we received when checking in w/Yelp. We did manage to finish both the coconut and Nutella gelato but the serving size of each was predictably small. Canellas to me is a cute place worth the discounted price but not much more.

I think this restaurant sums up a lot of what I saw while visiting SLC, which is: you don't have to do too much to impress people there. I think the culture is so generically white bread that pretty much anything works for people who are used to eating casseroles and stuff from their Relief Society cookbook. This place has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, and the cocktail I had was excellent. The liquor was definitely the best part of my night. My food, on the other hand, was only passable. I got chicken Parmasagna, and it was totally bland. It came with both spaghetti and mashed potatoes, and both were also underwhelming. The spaghetti was dry (how does marinara sauce get dry on pasta? To me, that's a sign of overcooking or re-heating or something sitting around awhile) and the potatoes were just whatever. The meal also came with a salad, which was fresh, but also just pedestrian. The cannoli we got for desert was good, but again, not special. The whole meal was pleasant because we had a nice conversation, but the food was totally unmemorable. I was starving and had been eating pretty bad convention food, so I ate everything. However, it was nothing to write home about, and I would not return to this restaurant if I was visiting SLC again. I thought it was pretty overpriced, given what I got.

Great service! Waiters/waitresses with patience for my large & loud group of friends. The food was amazing as well! I recommend the bruschetta, caprese salad, the pasta primavera & fettuccine Alfredo. Some of my friends ordered the muscles and clams as well, I didn't taste them but heard they were fantastic. Everything was worth the prices!

Always fresh. Great ambiance. Having said that, it has taken a very slight step backwards. My wife and I have been frequenting this establishment for years. The food is good the ambience is great and locations excellent in the heart of downtown. I can't quite put my finger on it but they are just are missing that spark that would make them great.

Not a bad italian resteraunt. They give you free gelatos just for checking in. The pistachio gelato was amazing. They accidently mixed up my order but realized the mistake right away and fixed it. There isnt much space for parking and you have to pay for it.

This past weekend we wandered into Cannella's really hungry and wanting a good dinner. What a find! The place has atmosphere and the menu is simply mouthwatering! Both of our entrees were delicious and I'll be going back when I'm in need of some good Italian food! LOVED this place!

Although I was impressed by their food the first time I after here (two years ago), my most recent outing left me very unimpressed. I ordered the chicken marsala, which was EXTREMELY bland. The chicken had the texture of reconstituted chicken breast and there was just nothing redeeming about the dish. I would say that it tasted like it was from a jar, but most bottled sauces at least have some flavor. The garlic bread was similarly unimpressive. If you're looking for a good Italian meal, I'd encourage you to look elsewhere.

After leaving Body Worlds at the Leonardo next door I still had an appetite for food. I was craving Canella's Italian Salad. OMG!!! So amazing!!! Joy was our server. Not only is she attentive, but she is hilarious. If you're available for lunch, you have to try the Turkey Tettrazini.

I go here quite a bit for work lunches. I love that it is a family business and that they have old family pictures all over the restaurant. The service is great and I enjoy the food and the gelato. I really like the lasagna, the house dressing on the salads, the turkey club, and the red pepper soup.

I love this place! We made reservations on "OpenTable" and upon arrival, we were seated promptly. The ambience feels comfortable and hip. It was not too loud and I felt it was the perfect atmosphere for catching up with friends. The waitress was attentive and respectful of our desire to sit and visit before we ordered. We didn't feel rushed and that was nice. When it came time to order she was helpful and our order was processed quickly. The food was divine! I had chicken marsala with warm goat cheese....it was mouthwatering. The food prices were reasonable as well! All in all, the service was fantastic, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere perfect for a night catching up with friends. I love this place. I will be back again!

Had a nice dinner with family. Not busy on a Wednesday. Food was good but I think pricey $13 for a bowl of spaghetti - no meat. Service was very good. Gracious about taking a picture. Several order desserts. Chocolate Beet Cake "melts in your mouth".

Great little restaurant with fabulous people. It appears like a tiny little restaurant at first glance, but it is quite roomy once you get a feel for it. Very quaint atmosphere. Our waiter was in jeans, so it's a great place for a casual friend dinner or a sexy dinner date. I like the casualness so it doesn't feel so overly trendy and pretentious. They brought us two soups when we asked to split our soup that comes with our pizza that we shared. That was super sweet! They serve prosecco by the glass - my favorite. Our Madonna pizza was awesome - too bad I hate tomatoes, but lucky Sarah loves them. So overall - a fun little place to go out and have pizza and champagne. I wouldn't say the food is out of this world, but it is your typical yummy Italian fare. And did I mention I'm a fan of any restaurant serving up Proseccos? The biggest thing to know is that if you check in on Yelp while you're there, you get a FREE GELATO!!

Went to Cannella's because it was part of the Dinoround event in SLC during our visit. It was a delightful surprise. The restaurant was comfortable and pleasant. Our waitress was equally so. (Eating out as much as we do, service is very important to us. There is nothing like a bad service to ruin your meal.) Lady Lisa was one of the best. It was clear that she was quite busy but we NEVER felt neglected. She was prompt and responsive with her service and the meal was well paced. I can see where other reviewers think this is pedestrian. The salads were nothing special. The risotto cakes were ok. A bit large for an appetizer, but at least you are getting what you paid for. The menu was pretty standard fare. We also had Alberto's Lasagna, it was suppose to be a meat sauce, but it was a bit light on the meat but a ton of cheese. Most people like this we prefer more of a balance. So then why would I give this FIVE stars? Well, then there was the Gnocchi with Shrimp. I have been searching for TWENTY years to find this gnocchi! Literally. I have had gnocchi all over this country and the last time I had gnocchi this good was when a co-worker brought it to share. They were sooooo fluffy and light they literally melted in your mouth. I believe there as an audible yum with every bite. I ate slower than I ever have just to savior every bit. The gnocchi was sooooo good that I am seriously contemplating routing my flights through SLC just so I can have dinner there. This is what gnocchi is suppose to taste like. Not lumps of pasty dough. However, the reviewers who think that this is expensive obviously don't eat out enough. Let me just state that I am really cheap and I felt that the price was reasonable. I did not think it was cheap, but I definitely did not feel that it was expensive. I got more than what I paid for. Bottom line, we got what we paid for, portions were good, service was excellent, and the food great.

Great food, drinks, and people. Not being from Salt Lake, I happened to be walking by and asked some folks what they thought, they swore up and down that it was the best restaurant in the area. They couldn't have been more right. Had the bruschetta, lasagna, and whichever salad they're known for. Absolutely delicious. Was cool that the ambiance was fun and relaxing but still nice and well put together. Was a combo of finer dining and cool atmosphere/scene, which is uncommon. Bartender said they've been here for almost 40 years, maybe that's why. Anyway, I'm just a tourist here, but that's my 2 cents...

Really enjoyed this place. The lasagna was top notch italian. Also, it's got a great vibe to it. Feels very 'New York City' but without the tourists. The bruschetta was phenomenal as well. They put a little goat cheese on the top that will knock your socks off. Their outdoor seating is a nice touch as well right across from the Leonardo museum.

I love this place. I have been eating here since the 80's and have watched it grow over the years. We still eat here every time we get to Salt Lake and are not disappointed. I love their Turkey Tetrazzini with a side of marinara. The house salad dressing is delicious too. See you next trip!

This is one of those places where, when you go, you think, "Why don't we come here more often?" I simply do not have the answer, because I love Cannella's. They have great daily drink and food features, like a $5 glass of Chianti (Mon.) and spaghetti & meatballs, or $5 cucumber martini & $ mussels (Fri) that don't disappoint. To be honest, I've been blown away by the food. The meatballs are good enough to make one second-guess vegetarianism. Oh, and don't forget the side of garlic bread. It may be $4, but it's worth it. The menu is varied, moderately priced, and the dishes are tasty and well presented. Plus, I love the atmosphere. It's classy Italian-meets-casual-hipster, with what seem like fun, interesting people in the booths and at the bar. The music seems just about right, and, if you need it, there's a TV in the corner, too. It's a great spot; you won't be disappointed.

What a great place went there for the first time for our anniversary the other night and I had the baseball steak and it put Ruth's Chris and Fleming's to shame and for only 21.00 came with a salad as well. Oh and the house salad dressing was very good. My wife had the Tuscan Chicken it was just as good and the cocktails really were strong like some reviews have said it was not a measured pour! We will be going back soon to try some pasta dishes however it will be very hard for me not to order that steak again.

I had the mussels and clams appetizer and the halibut special for an entree, both were excellent. The server also suggested a merlot that's on special. The entire meal was good. The Caesar salad was just alright. The tiramisu was a bit of a disappointment, but we quickly fixed it by ordering Kahlua to pour over it.

My favorite little Italian place in SLC, and I'm Italian. With roots in New York. And terribly picky. There's something very fresh and modern about Cannella's. It's a combination of the decor, unique menu, genuine staff, and location. But beyond those things, the food is just fabulous. Every thing is so flavorful and inspired! And the cuts of meats are top notch. Another thing I love about Cannella's are the drink specials. They have a blood orange beverage that cannot be beat. Cannella's is always a must-do on my short list for my semi-annual Utah visits.

Chicken parm is great. They did recently change their bread and I'm not impressed. Should go back to the wheat garlic bread they had before. Sometimes the service is lacking and it can get really loud but the food is spectacular.

Just average. Not sure what the big deal is here. Service was just okay. The food was fine even mediocre. The location was convenient so we went. I know it's an establishment of SLC, but there are better choices.

Great small Italian restaurant. Laidback atmosphere and friendly service. Prices are a little high for some dinners but the food is very good. Good selection of beers and cocktails. Would visit again.

I went here with my husband and my parents. I had the turkey tetezni (I can't spell it) and it was really good. I also had the house salad and it was really yummy. My dad had the tortellini and he said it was very good. My mum had the sausage and pepper sandwich and it was very good but she liked mine better. My husband had the beef brie sandwich and it was really good. My husband and dad had the soups and they were both really good and their house salad was very good. I would go here again. Yummy!!

It's the atmosphere but the food was good too if you have deep pockets and don't expect a lot of food for your money. First let me start this by saying I am totally biased because as a person who doesn't eat dairy, I should never be invited to an Italian place for dinner. So I carefully ordered the one thing I could eat that was gluten free and dairy free which was basically a piece of zucchini pimped up on a portabella mushroom. I think what bugged me more was that it was 17 or 18 dollars for that. I got a tiny salad and some slices of vegetables for 17 bucks. I mean come on. The one thing without meat in it and it still costs that much? ridiculous. I watched my friends eat and their food looked good but for the price it wasn't a lot of food. Best part was 3 dollar margaritas on a Wednesday! woot woot! The pizza my other friends got seemed like really the best value. Anyway it was super loud in there too but if you're into a busy place with slow service and you love meat and cheese it seems decent enough. I wouldn't bring a vegetarian in here, the menu is super limited for anyone with food allergies or someone who is a vegan. I'd only go here if I was asked to go. It's way out of my price range. I can get the same experience for less money elsewhere. We had a large group of people but they knew this well ahead of time and our food took forever to arrive and mine was not even warm!!! Summary, if you really like Italian food, have money to spend, don't mind waiting a while for food and like a busy loud restaurant then do it!

Cannellas used to be our stand by for a good restaurant if we didn't have other plans but I think it's no longer the place. We had both our mothers out for dinner about 1 month ago and from beginning to end it was a nightmare. Our server was Kat -- she was very nice and sociable...too sociable--she had to blab on and on about her favorite wines. She took our order and forgot one of our drinks--we had to ask for it 15 minutes later. Then all the salads were brought out except for my husband's soup and 20 minutes later we had to ask for it. Then 3 of us ordered $32 steaks remembering their baseball steaks were very good in the past. I ordered medium rare and got well done. It was not worth the higher end price. I don't like to send my food back but wish I did. She asked if we'd like the dessert menu and we said yes. It was brought to us and we were waiting for her to come back and take our order and instead she brought our check. At that point we were just ready to leave so it was just as well but usually when you're interested in spending more money, you would think there would be a priority. Nope. So disappointed and it's worse when you've been talking the place up that it's good.

For lunch I've had the flatbread caprese sandwich. It was good, runny, but still tasty. They forgot to give me my soup (which I was really looking forward to), and since we had picked it up, they didn't have a chance to correct that. For dinner I've had their chicken marsala, which was tasty but left my head spinning (perhaps the alcohol wasn't fully cooked out?). In all, it's a nice place, but I've had other italian locally that I prefer.

I like this place. The bruschetta is fresh and tasty on nice soft bread. The house dressing is pretty good. The pasta sauce on the rigatoni has a hearty simmered all day taste while the sauce for the ravioli pomodoro is fresh and light. The sausage in the tortellini had just the right amount of spice. Nice place for homemade pasta sauces, fresh ingredients, and delicious cocktails.

Worst service I have ever had. I arrived with my party and was told that we would be eating by the door. We told the person that we would not and then he decided to seat us in the back. When seated, we waited 15 minutes before the waitress came over to tell us to wait longer. While waiting another 7 minutes, we decided that the restaurant has crammed in to many people into one space and we could not hear each other over the noise. After getting disgusted with "waiting" for the server who we never saw again. We walked out of the restaurant and nobody even noticed or thanked us for coming. As for the menu. The prices are high for something that you can get at a village inn minus the better servers.

We really enjoyed our dinner at Cannella's. We had crab cakes; the clam and muscle appetizer; great meat lasagna; pizza; and, cioppino. We'll be going back on our next trip to SLC. The restaurant was very welcoming and the owner even stopped by to say hello. It was interesting to find out that he attended LMU, where I went to law school. Also, he was quite supportive of us importing our wines into Utah.

We like this place a lot and go often after a movie at the Broadway for late night dinner and drinks. However, this week (monday night) we took the children for a dinner after a dance performance. This was our first visit on a weekday evening it was not what we were used to...both children asked why we like the place so much after the visit. The service took forever, they dropped my wife's pizza on the floor in the kitchen and we had to remake (another 20 minutes on top of a long wait) they told my daughter that her special has a salad with it but that was charged as a additional item and we had to wait and wait to pay the bill while the server talked it up with other patrons. The server was aloof and did not seem to appreciate at all the fact the meal was taking so long and the service was so spotty. It was exaggerated by the fact we were with young children who were out late, hungry and tired. I still like the place, I will still go back but I must say I was disappointed by this visit and the service was not at all what I am used to from this otherwise fine establishment.

I am not a pasta person. You could probably guess that looking at my reviews and seeing a lack of Italian places. But this stop at Cannella's was a very surprising experience. We came for lunch and found a seat with no problem. This can be difficult especially downtown right at noon. I decided to try out the ravioli, with marinara and sausage. I was very pleased with this dish. Everything was cooked just right and the sausage had a nice flavor with just the right amount of spice. Service was very friendly and they were always attentive. When I get in the mood for Italian again, I will want to come back here.

I decided on Cannella's after much consideration from the Yelp community. I know you can't always determine if something is worthwhile just by someone else's opinion. So -- I chose to take my wife here for our 14 year anniversary (01/31). We ate there on the 29th though. I called to get a reservation in advance so that we could ensure not having to wait too long (Contrary to the indications on this restaurant, they do take reservations). It's a small place but nicely dimmed and cozy. We started with the "daily special" for our appetizer, cheese and bread with olives -- very disappointing. The cheese was hard, cold and not very flavorful. The bread was sour dough and not appropriate. The Zinfandel washed it down just fine though. It got better. Next, I ordered the tomato soup with basil -- awesome! Probably the best tomato soup I've had. And I don't usually like tomato soup. My wife however was disappointed with her salad. She said it was not very fresh and the honey almond vinaigrette dressing was not good (according to her). On to the main dishes. I ordered the Tortellini which was very good. The sausage had a great spice as you would expect from an Italian sausage. The chicken was smokey and tasty as well. Again, the bread could have been better though (sourdough, sliced too thin and very oily). My wife stayed safe and ordered the chicken Alfredo. I tasted it and thought it was very good. Kind of hard to mess up chicken Alfredo though. We topped it off with the creme brulet which was OK. Overall, I would say it was good, not great. Service was OK for a Saturday evening. Our server forgot us almost immediately after we ordered the appetizers but not too big a deal.

First time visiting Cannella's. Apparently, It's been there for quite some time, but I just noticed it a few weeks ago. We were trying to decide where to go... we wanted Italian... but wanted to sit outside too. Then it came to me! That little place I noticed a few weeks ago with the Stella Artois umbrellas on their Patio, let's go there! All in all, I think it was a good decision. Our server and hostess were both quite friendly and attentive to our needs. Waters were never empty and we never had to want for anything. The food was good, not great, but no complaints from us. We tried the Rigatoni (with sausage), the spaghetti Pomodoro, manicotti and spaghetti with meatballs. All were good, if a bit too saucy. Extra sauce is good to soak up with bread though, so I'd rather have too much than not enough. They must have taken the "MEAT MEAT AND MORE MEAT" review to heart, because they now have a fairly extensive vegetarian menu and lots of cheese-only, meatless, offerings. I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Cannella's. We had a very nice time.

Here for lunch. Nice look to the place, good location, though parking on the street can get occupied quickly. I ordered at counter, the food came out in a reasonable time, which is important to me at lunch time. While the Italian sausage salad my interviewer had looked good, my Caesar salad was bland and seemed over dressed. The croutons are so hard you can't get them on your fork. The chicken was perfectly cooked, but even that couldn't save this salad. if they had dressed it right before it went out and less so, it would have been good. But too much dressing and too much time to sit left everything wet and wilted.

Stopped by for a late lunch and was amazed by how delicious the Turkey Tetrazzini was, my wife had the Hamburger on home-made english muffin that was also a delight. The Cannoli's were equally as impressive. Too bad we were leaving that day, would have loved to had dinner there. The owner, Joe, was there and took great pride in their food preparation and their bar and lounge area.

Upon arriving promptly for our 7:30 reservation, we were whisked away to our not-so-desirable table - right by the door, surrounded by other hungry patrons waiting for their tables. Shame on me for not asking for another table, but I was hungry! Big mistake, as we shared our adult beverages not only with each other, but other people's butts. Yeah - eye level with a derrière is not a good way to start the evening. Other than the rough start, the rest of the meal was fantastic. I had the special - lobster ravioli, and my significant other had the steak. Both great dishes. We also shared the bruschetta and key lime pie. Overall a great night with great service. I will go to Cannella's again.

gotta say- not as good as I remembered it. the house salad was weak, I remember a better balance of sausage garbanzo beets and cheese. I had pasta and it was served not super warm.

I love the lunch specials here. They are a fantastic value with great quality food. The manicotti with a meatball is comfort food at it's finest. Cheesy goodness with an oversized meatball that is moist and savory. The salad with Italian sausage is pretty darn good as well. Service is quick and friendly and the coke comes from a tap at the bar which means it is oh so good.

Thursday night, party of three around 7:00 P.M. One half of the restaurant was packed the other was empty. Several members of staff saw us standing at the door and walked right by. We finally asked one of the staff members as they passed if we could be seated. We were taken to the empty side of the restaurant, dirty tables everywhere. Were told that a server would be with us in a few moments, we reviewed the menu. It looked good. Another table of two was seated adjacent to our table. A server immediately appeared and took their drink order, brought drinks and we waited. Server engaged other table in conversation, made recommendations and we waited. Other table ordered and went off to place the order and we waited. We decided to leave. While walking out a member of staff cheerily thanked us for coming in and to come again. One of my party pulled them aside, and told them of our experience. The staff member smiled and walked away without comment. We won't be returning. BTW - there's a nice Thai restaurant a few doors down.

Our connecting flight to Dallas was cancelled so we ended up having to stay the night in Salt Lake City. We were in the mood for Italian so we checked yelp and found this other restaurant. For whatever reason we weren't able to locate that restaurant but stumbled upon this restaurant. It was amazing. I asked for a variation of a pasta dish with sausage on the menu but with vodka sauce. It was delicious. The watermelon soup was divine! So glad we found this restaurant. Highly recommended.

So I went to Cannella's for lunch which is a lot more casual compared to diner. Anyway, I got a minestrone soup, caesar salad, chicken alfredo, caprese sandwich, tiramisu, espresso and ice cream. Yea I do eat a lot plus I wanted to enjoy a little of everything...but here's a little review of each item: Minestrone soup: soup was great, flavorful yet light enough to leave room for the other courses. It is the middle of the winter so it was freezing outside so the minestrone was perfect to warm us up! Caesar Salad: I really didn't like the salad. I didn't even eat half of it. The dressing tasted almost as if it had mustard in it which isn't good for caesar. Chicken alfredo: Okay so THEE only reason I ordered the alfredo is cause it said it was made with linguine pasta which is my favorite and that's what I use to make my alfredo at home unlike the traditional "fettucine alfredo." So I was way excited to see their twist on the way I make this...anyway I got my plate and to my disappointment they used fettucine so I asked the server why when the menu said linguine and she laugh and said "alfredo is always fettucine alfredo" which is really dumb because alfredo itself is a sauce and you can use any sauce with any pasta there isn't a rule but also cause it was in their menu that way and she didn't even noticed until I pointed it out and had to make her read it. But after that she apologized and said they would fix it. They brought the right pasta in no time and to my delight it was wonderful. I loved the presentation and the fresh basil and tomato on top as garnish was the right touch to even spark the flavor of the sauce and the delicious, done-to-perfection grilled chicken. It also came with a garlic bread that was pretty tasty and NOT greasy! A+ Caprese sandwich was good BUT could be better. Tiramisu was pretty good. Not the best I've but no complaints either. THe espresso wasn't the best either but no biggie good enough. THE GELATO: DELISH!!!! I hate cinammon but the gelato was sooo good and had just the perfect touch of cinammon that I could gladly eat it and enjoy it. Great texture and feel. Totally recommend it! Overall good price also I spent $35 bucks maybe for all that food! and the portions were just perfect! not too not too small. I finished all my food except for the salad. The service was good, the staff were attentive and kind. I liked the ambiance and the lighting and location. I would recommend this place and maybe go back a couple times maybe to try a couple other things on the menu but the isn't a lot on there so it's probably a place I wouldn't go regularly. But definitely worth a try! :)

If you haven't tried the Tortellini in vodka cream sauce, then you don't know what *real* living is, my friend. It is almost as phenomenally decadent as the chocolate beet cake. The entire staff is warm and friendly, and the service is excellent.

I recently dined at Cannella's after a hiatus of several years and a very mediocre experience. I figured since they expanded, added outdoor seating and always seem busy, that maybe thing had improved. But, alas, they have not. The lines and crowds I cannot explain, just like I cannot explain the lines and crowds at The Old Spaghetti Factory or Olive Garden. I guess it is better than Chef Boyardee. Purely mediocre Italian, mediocre service and mediocre feel.

Great atmosphere for lunch; indoor or outdoor seating. Great bang for your buck but the wait staff can be a bit flighty. The tomatoe Basil soup was rich and delicious and pasta dishes have yet to dissapoint. For lunch, one of the better spots and atomospheres in Salt Lake

Sit at the bar, or near the bar. There's nothing I hate more than being annexed into overflow seating (read:parking). I'd rather a restaurant stay quaint and hard to get into than have them expand and make me feel lonely. However, the food is great. The traditional family dishes are best: the lasagna, chicken parmesan, etc. They also do nightly specials.

I was looking forward to going here because I heard they had $5 mussels on Friday's. I called ahead on Friday and asked if that was they case. The server I spoke to on the phone said yes they did have $5 mussels tonight and made a reservation for me. When we got to the restaurant we ordered the mussels and the waiter said they no longer have those on the menu nor did they have the ingredients to make them. We were bummed as that was the whole reason we went there. Then we ordered pizza and he said they didn't have pizza dough that evening. Yet several other tables were eating pizza. The server was extremely rude to us and purposely avoided our table the whole night. We felt like he was going out of his way to be unaccommodating because clearly they weren't out of pizza dough. When we asked him why other diners had pizza he claimed they ran out of dough. After we had placed our order a couple was sat next to us and what did they order? Mussels. Yup, they were able to order the mussels we were told was off the menu. Despite how horrid our experience was and how rude the server was I still tipped him 18% because I am a server and I know most servers live off the tips they receive. Well this morning when I checked my account I saw that he added $2 to his tip. I am furious and disgusted with this place. Not only was the server incredibly rude but he increased his tip without my permission. I will never dine here again.

Food is fine but the service is total crap. I've been twice now, once at lunch and once at dinner. During lunch it wasn't so bad but our server hardly ever returned to check on us for refills or anything. And during dinner it was even worse. I was there with a group of 7, they sat us in the basement which seemed nice at first but we were there for nearly an hour before we were served our salads and then 2 hours until our dinner entrees arrived. I will not be returning to Cannella's.

Came while visiting SLC - upon first arrival it took some time for us to find a hostess, however after that the service was great. There are two main rooms, the bar room is a bit more trendy and the dining room less so. Overall the atmosphere was casual but upscale... The outside of the place isn't as nice as the inside so don't be afraid to go in! The bar was also really nice and if I was with only one other I wouldn't have minded eating there. I had the gnocchi shrimp and scampi sauce. It was an interesting combination but really good! everyone else really liked their meals as well. Much better than the average Italian place. The prices were very cheap, but coming from NYC you might say that to anything. Was def glad we picked this place!

I've been past here so many times and have always been curious how good it was, it certainly looked interesting. It was good but not enough that I'm heading back you can only eat so many times in a day and there are a lot of restaurants and dishes I haven't had yet, I feel my time would be better spent elsewhere. The ambiance was nice and it seems that it's a place with a lot of history, but from what I gather the former owner has passed away and with his seems to have gone the spirit of the place. It's still a hangout that's hanging on and the current owners keep it alive but it's not the family Italian restaurant it seems it used to be. I got the chicken Parmesan and while it wasn't bad it wasn't great either. I'm never impressed if I can make the same thing better and it costs me less, plus chicks dig it if you cook for them. So when I go out to eat I'm hoping to be impressed, not just to have somebody do the work for me. Basically this place feels like it could be alot more if it's potential was ever realized.

ambience: B+ decor and patio seating are decent, albeit a bit disheveled. but only a bit. service: B you order at the front desk, then seat yourself. i'm amazed at how they can find you after you've sat yourself. i went during lunch, and the hostess/cashier was most likely a young daughter of the owner. gives it a family feel, but i'd rather have a hostess that is more mature/knowledgeable. the fare: B rustic, and plentiful, but not overbearing. you CAN actually finish the whole meal. penne arrabbiata just decent, rustic, and satisfying. a hearty red sauce laced with italian sausage, topped with fresh grated parmesan. the garlic bread looked like thick american toast, with butter and garlic salt. i prefer good sliced italian bread rubbed with garlic, drizzled with olive oil, and good sea salt sprinkled on top. this family owned restaurant prides itself on good homemade fare and it shows. the food is always decent, and consistent. mr. cannella's sons opened a similar restaurant in sandy called Fratelli. i've actually eaten more at Fratelli's than Cannella's.

Food is great, service however could use polishing.I was there with 2 others and while the server was not rude or mean,he just did not appear to be with it.We ordered wine. One in our party told the server he did not want wine and was about to order a different type of drink. When the server walked back this was pointed out to him and there was no apology. In addition not once did he come over and ask how everything was.I have had better service at Dennys. The hostess however did greet us with a warm welcome.I would go back,I would just request a different server.

I took my wife here for a special occasion and we really liked the feel of this restaurant. The food was ok but maybe a little bit over priced for what we got. The service was extremely slow. Our waitress served a few other tables before serving us even though we arrived first. The worst part about our experience was the fact that my wife became violently ill as we were going to the car. The food really messed her up inside. I wrote an email to their customer service to complain and get some sort of compensation for our horrible experience. They didn't even take the time to reply to me at all. That speaks volumes about what kind of a restaurant they are running. We will NOT be back.

This review is only for the bread. They are making their own bread there. Sourdough. Otherworldly good. Maybe the best bread I have ever had. Maybe the best bread ever. You can buy loaves for 3$ bucks at their pizza place next door. Or get it with your meal. Incredible!

The food was pretty good. We went for Dine O Round. The Bruschetta was the best we've had. The bread had the perfect texture and consistency with great topping. I got the Spaghetti Pomodoro, that was pretty good. My hubbie got the meat lasagna pizza. I could've done without the lasagna noodles on the pizza. The beet Chocolate cake was pretty good, the Raspberry Cheesecake was better. A little better than an average restaurant. Service was alright. The waitress wasn't very friendly... not a punk, but she didn't really pay any attention to us. The highlight: Frank Laydan came by our table and talked to us briefly!

I've gone twice to this spot and will probably not return a third. The first time I went - I thought maybe it was an off night. The 2nd time I went I realized the kitchen is just not set up right. It is a warm charming spot with an excellent wait staff. Service is good but food is lacking. Something is always good but most is not impressive and even inedible. I should have sent my dish back or said something to the owner but- I was exhausted and super hungry (dare I say grumpy from not being able to eat mt main dish) after boarding all day.

What a fun evening.....I'm not sure if it was just the food or the great company I was in, but no matter, I know our dinners were yummy! The house salad was nice and had a few little "extras" on it, which most places have seemed to cut back on. Their "House" dressing is my absolute favorite combination ever: bleu cheese and balsamic vinegar mixed together....very yummy! I had the rigatoni with red sauce and sausage. It was really, really good; however, I just had a feeling that the red sauce was from a jar and then "doctored" up a bit. The sausage was just one large link....I think I would have rather they sliced it and mixed it in, but that's personal preference and the sausage was really good! One friend had the tortellini with vodka cream sauce.....which looked delicious and she ate every morsel! My other friend had the chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and some kind of cheese. It came with a few spears of asparagus and was originally served over mashed potatoes, but they were more than happy to substitute angel hair pasta when asked. Dessert was REALLY good! We shared the espresso creme brulee and the tiramisu......both were excellent! It really was a great ending to a perfect meal. I think the best part of the night was the service.....we had reservations at 7pm and ended up being the last ones to leave the restaurant around 11:30pm. The wait staff wasn't in our face wondering when we were going to leave and didn't even clear off our dessert dishes, which made us feel welcome to stay as long as we wanted. Eventually, they started to turn off a few lights, but assured us that we were welcome to stay and that they (the workers) were just hanging out in the bar area.....we NEVER felt rushed in any way, which just made for a really great evening..... I would give them 4 1/2 stars, but it's not allowed.....so I dropped it to 4. I really enjoyed Cannella's.....a WELCOME change from all of Utah's chain restaurants.....

Horrible! I was expecting to have good authentic food secondary to the reviews. However my food tasted horrible. The lasagna was similar to a microwave dinner. Sauce not fresh and just bc u smother something with cheese doesn't make it taste better. The turtle cheese cake was highly processed and lacked the distinctive flavor.

We stumbled upon this place by accident. We were actually walking to a different restaurant from our hotel on a really cold and windy day. All of us live in Houston and were freezing, (the locals had shorts on, what cha gonna do?) While waiting to cross the street, a woman sitting inside Cannella's knocked on the window and motioned for us to come in. With no hesitation, we all agreed that it would be worth it to get out of the cold. Now unfortunately I cannot remember what each of us had, but I do know that we all cleaned our plates. It was wonderful! Turns out the woman who wanted us to come in was the owner. She was super nice as was the entire staff.

Went for dinner a few months ago and it was pretty good.. not above my expectations. It was busy and cosy and the drink special suited my needs. I had lunch there last week and it was a totally different experience. The service was very attentive (although we were the only ones there eating) I had the veal with a salad and garlic bread and it was nasty. The underside of the veal was burnt and the bread was just something they had purchased pre made and frozen; I've had better at the grocery store. I would possibly go back for dinner but not for lunch.

yum to bum! we went about 3 years ago with a large group and absolutely loved it! we had a great experience and the service was great. Myself and a few friends decided to go again for lunch the other day...terrible. Our hostess was rude, the food was aweful! it tasted like it came right from Cisco into the microwave and then charged 9.35 for it like a high school cafeteria. They overcharged us on italian sodas, the only good thing on their menu, and when confronted about the charge, the hostess told us she had no way of changing it and we were wrong. DO NOT EAT HERE!

Cannella's is one of my favorite Italian places in Salt Lake. The food is consistently great and the ambiance on the bar side is awesome. My go to meal is the ravioli with pesto cream sauce and a dinner salad with the house dressing. I've never had anything bad or disappointing here and to top it all off, they are very generous with their wine pours.

Everything I have tasted here I have loved. Their meatballs are amazing. So much flavor! Bruschetta is great, spaghetti awesome. This place has never disappointed.

The food is pretty average, although the bruschetta is fantastic, but the service here was HORRIBLE. We went for an early dinner and although it wasn't crowded at ALL, our server moved at a glacial pace. It took 20 minutes to get our check and another 25 waiting for change. What made it worse was that as we sat there our server passed by at least 10 times and ignored us each time. The hostess was the one who asked how our food was, if we needed a check, etc. etc. At one point we could see/hear our server gossiping behind the doorway that leads to the kitchen as we waited endlessly for ANYTHING. Pretty much the worst service I have had in a looong while and it totally turned me off from eating here again.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
